Boat overheating after impeller change

Water is critical for a boat's outboard motor to function properly.

How to Change Out Your Impeller on Your Boat

Without it, an outboard motor will overheat. Overheating in outboard motors can be caused by any of various parts of the water cooling system. Vigilant regular maintenance on your outboard is your best insurance against a cooling system overheating problem.

Overheating after Impeller Replacement

The most common cause of outboard motor overheating is water pump failure. Lack of raw water flow and lack of fresh water can cause water pump failure. Check for lack of raw water flow by noting the temperature of the outlet side of the system.

A water flow problem is indicated if the water temperature is excessively high. Lack of fresh water can be noted if there is a large increase in temperature between the inlet and and outlet of the heat exchanger. Water pump failure can also be caused by a defective heat exchanger, though this is harder to check.

Generally, if it is not a problem with lack of raw water flow or fresh water, the heat exchanger will be the cause. The impeller, the device used to pressure the water into the bottom of the powerhead, is a common cause of overheating. A corroded impeller will no longer allow the water pump to function properly. It can also occasionally shed some blades, in which case tracing the water flow is recommended to find all the pieces.

If the intake pump starves for water for a few moments, the rubber impeller may be damages. However, it is also common that impellers fail due to their old age. To prevent damage, the water impeller should be replaced every two years regardless of usage.

It is more common for an impeller to go bad from rot due to nonuse rather than from wearing out from excessive usage. Exhaust manifolds and risers can clog and restrict the flow of water through the engine.

Although this is most common in salt water, it is still a possibility and cause of overheating. The best way to tackle such a problem is to first consider the obvious. Since its a service item I'd start there. This video will teach you When the impeller is broken, it stops the supply of water to the engine and results in overheating.

Change water pump. Port engine overheated. The impeller is essentially a small, round disc with spinning blades used to move water through the circuit of the outboard motor. To read and see the photos click on the links. As you know the outboard motor is one of the most important parts of a boat and that's why it is very important to take proper care of it. Insert a new gasket in the groove on the underside of the water pump cover and apply a bead of gasket sealer to the gasket.

Should be easy to Change the impeller on that motor for peace of mind. Also if you changed the impeller on the pump but did not change the whole pump housing your problem could be there.

It never did it before. The correct Jabsco number for a replacement impeller can also be determined according to the number of blades, diameter Dimension Aimpeller depth Dimension B and shaft diameter Dimension C. My old motor would get plugged up and stop peeing but didn't overheat and the mono always did the trick.

I never had a problem with it. It's 50 bucks well spent. Raw water system is clear. I ordered the impeller directly from Suzuki along with the gasket. Old one chewed up. After replacing 3 impellers one weekend I ended up completely bypassing the water filter.

Here are four pretty clear indicators that something is wrong: 1. MerCruiser part k06 or q Step 4: Verify there are no restrictions to the water flow going to the engine. The water pump impeller is the cause of most water circulation and overheating problems. One part might be responsible, or a number of parts can contribute to the overheating problem.Have you noticed the temperatures seem to be going to extremes the last few years?

Around the country, we have been seeing colder colds and hotter hots, and for those of us that play or work outside, extreme temperatures require extra precautions.

And of course extra complaining! This time of year, I forget about the cold and complain about the heat which I really should be happy about, because it means boating weather.

The extra heat can have a detrimental effect on the operation of our vehicles. I also have an air-cooled motorcycle that starts to run hot in too much stop-and-go traffic: not much airflow over the cylinders to keep the heat down.

Not even boats are immune! If you have ever been out on the water and had an engine spewing steam from the engine compartment because it started overheating, well, you know what heat can do. Overheating is no minor issue: according to BoatUS Marine Insurance data9 percent of boat fires are caused by engine overheating. Why do boats catch fire? BoatUS statistics give some insight into the answer, and could help….

The first and easiest is if the dash gauge for the temperature goes out of the green and into red. An overheated engine may not want to start up again after you shut it off, until it cools down. If your engine is running hot, you definitely have a problem that needs to be fixed. Troubleshooting and finding the problem can be difficult. A few of the more common issues include:.

The fact that your boat could overheat means you should know the basics of your engine cooling systems. Of course that also means anything in the water goes through the passageways: vegetation, debris, trash, etc.

Therefore, blockage and damage to the pump can be an issue. That is why you should always flush your cooling systems. Most new boats, however, have partial raw water systems. The engine is in a closed system that is very similar to your automobile, and contains antifreeze which actually keeps the water from freezing and raises the boiling point of the water slightly. Water passes through the engine and is heated. The impeller is essentially a small, round disc with spinning blades used to move water through the circuit of the outboard motor.

When the impeller fails, the pump can't pump and the engine will overheat. After the impellar was used for a couple of hours it crumbled to bits and the engine overheated. Impellers should be replaced every other year. It's one way to come closer to your boat and motor. Ensure the false bottom is not full of sea water. Previous seasons she would run at full for hours with not a complaint. Temp gauge read above normal closer to than I started the engine and found that no water was coming from the exhaust and within a few minutes the exhaust elbow was too hot to touch again.

The boat speed was enough to force water through the system. The one thing thing I did differently before last season was change the coolant. If you are replacing the impeller due to overheat issues versus routine maintenance, go ahead and replace the pump body as well.

I keep the old ones, that are in good condition, as extra, extra spares. Did that last year my self. Overheating problems in an inboard-outboard motor, also called a "stern-drive," happen as a result of component failure somewhere in the cooling system. One important caveat here and that is to shut off the water at the seacock especially if the water pump is lower than the water level as the siphon action can flood the boat. I had the boat serviced at the beginning of the season and the impeller was changed.

Many models and engines may I am overheating. I am hoping that I might have a crack in the housing or something wrong with the impeller. There should be a little rubber grommet between the water pump housing, and the coolant pipe running up to the block.

We usually find that the rubber water pump impellar blades have turned brittle from sitting. At an idle it passes air into the impeller and burns it up quickly. After all of that it still overheats.

At low rpm the impeller vanes contact the housing and need a tight seal surface to create necessary suction to pump. I guess I was wondering if the impeller would overheat it since it is closed cooling. Should be easy to Change the impeller on that motor for peace of mind. While myriad of circumstances can cause an engine to overheat, it is highly preventable in most cases, starting with ample water drawn into the intakes.

Inboard-powered boats typically have grillage guarding the intake passages to prevent eel grass and other debris from being sucked in.

Problems occur when the grill slits or holes are covered with marine growth or too much bottom paint, as the flow to the water pump can be restricted. This can be further compounded when the intake through-hull fittings serve as home to barnacles, which create more constriction.

If you rely on the yard to bottom paint your boat, insist they remove the screens, clean out the throughhulls and dab some paint on the insides. Once marine growth calls these surfaces home, you own it, alive or dead, and it crowds out the water available to your engine and other water-dependent accessories. Some boats also have internal engine and accessory strainers. But the best find was aboard a boat in Killarney, Ontario.

Most internal raw-water strainers use a Lexan globe that makes it easy to see when it needs cleaning. This strainer, however, had a stainless steel case that required disassembly to reveal what it contained. In addition to Georgian Bay weeds, wedged tightly inside was a hapless fingerling walleye. Obviously, this foreign-built boat never had, or, had lost its exterior grill on the hull bottom.

Confirm any exterior intake protection is replaced properly before launching your boat. On my boat I always use new fasteners each spring. Churned up sand or mud from the prop wash that occurs while operating in shallow water will also find its way into the strainers. To save wear and tear on the water pumps, my rule is to shut off the generator, air conditioner, and live well when backing into the slip if such conditions exist. Overheating can also be caused by a worn or damaged water pump impeller.

If the impeller is damaged and is missing a vane, make sure any displaced pieces are accounted for and removed. Any debris left in the water passages may reduce flow, which leads to persistent overheating. When a new impeller is installed, run the engine or related system as soon as possible to ensure proper operation, as I learned from experience. The engine folks who replaced the impeller on my starboard diesel insisted all of the old pieces had been found and the boat was ready to go.Forums New posts Search forums.

This did not happen Brought boat to local lake and launched to test again under different conditions. Started engine and revved slightly to prime impeller. After a few minutes boat overheated and engine automatically shut down when the engine temperature approached degrees. Allowed engine to cool and tried again. Same results. Re-loaded boat on the trailer and headed home.

What I? Used garden hose to spray water from impeller outlet hose into the engine and out the stern drive exhaust without any restriction or blockage Engine cold and thermostat most likely in the closed position Re-inspected impeller see picture With the impeller installed in the housing same as in the pictureI used my the palm of my hand to seal off the impeller reservoir opening and blew air into the inlet hose opening.

Air flowed with little restriction in both directions.

Is this correct? I would think that an impeller pump when not spinning would not allow water or air to pass otherwise all the water in the engine could drain out of the boat when it was taken out of the lake. Other questions: Does the impeller need priming? I would think with the hose attachment and pressure at the drive that water would be available to the impeller. Does the boat have an additional water pump in the engine?

Does the Volvo Duo-Prop out-drive have an impeller? I was told? Now I am rethinking. All help would be appreciated. Lou C Admiral. Joined Nov 10, Messages 6, I've never had a Volvo but I can tell you there is no impeller in a Volvo drive and your engine has a circulation pump on the front of the engine, this circulates water through the block and heads just like an automotive water pump.

This does not have anything to do with your problem though. The reason why some Volvos have trouble priming on the water hose is if you think about it, the water must travel up from the water intakes in the outdrive, then through the transom mount and in the hose that connects to the impeller housing on the front of the engine. To that end, it continues to add new football betting lines for NFL fans and new college football odds on all games for players who bet more on Saturdays than Sundays.
